Women & Elections: Catching a Wave or Building a Movement?
Recorded on Friday, September 20th 2019
2018’s “Year of the Woman” brought the largest class of new women in history to the California State Legislature. In just one year, California rebounded from a 20-year low in women’s representation, to a tie with its all time high. 60% of its women legislators are women of color, triple the national average. At all levels and all around the country, 2018 saw a similar quantum leap in elected leadership that looks like America. And yet in the CA Legislature, women still make up only 31%, grossly out of sync with their status as 51% of the population.
How did we get this far, and how can we go further? What can we do to ensure that 31% is not the high water point, but rather the beginning of the end of gender imbalance? Why did women’s representation flatline and even fall after 1992’s “Year of the Woman,” and what can we do to avoid that in 2020 and beyond? What does race have to do with it? How do we go from “Year of the Woman,” to “Women Forever?” Join experts from around the state for a discussion on these questions and the path forward.

Campaign Finance: Dark Money. Clean Money. Can an Ethical Candidate Compete?
Recorded on Friday, March 8th 2019
Campaign finance regulations define the way candidates and voters experience elections. While the presence of “dark money” turns many would-be candidates and voters away entirely from the electoral process, what is clean money, and what options do candidates have when it comes to running a “clean” campaign? Is it possible to run ethically and competitively? What is the state of campaign finance reform in California and more broadly?
A conversation featuring experts on campaign finance, including former Obama-appointed FEC Commissioner, FPPC Chair, and star of documentary “Dark Money,” Ann Ravel; Gary Winuk, former Chief of the Enforcement Division at the Fair Political Practices Commission; and Rajan Narang, Director of Policy and Non-Federal Strategy with End Citizens United.

The Lowdown on Independent Expenditures
Recorded on April 26th, 2018
California Legislative races are multi-million dollar enterprises. What’s driving the race for dollars higher and higher? Independent expenditures, the unlimited third party spending for and against candidates, are a big part of the answer. Candidates struggling to be heard above the high volume between competing special interests are forced to find more and more donors. How can lower volume messages get through? Is there an alternative to these proxy wars? What’s a candidate to do? Moderated by Michelle Henry, Principal at Michelle W. Henry Consulting and featuring panelists Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry AD 4, Vicki Veenker, 2016 AD 24 candidate, and Mike Young, Associate Director of Campaigns for CLCV.
