Sarah Carson

Director of Research and External Strategy

Sarah Carson, PhD has been studying and advocating for women in politics for nearly a decade, and has a deep commitment to mission-driven work and progressive policy change.

In her most recent role as Director of Communications & Operations at Emerge California, Sarah managed internal and external communications, data, and projects. She was proud to promote the organization’s impact and mission of training Democratic women to run for office and highlight diverse women leaders’ accomplishments.

Sarah co-authored and led research design for California Women’s List’s report “Her Stories on the Campaign Trail: Analyzing the Mental Health Impacts of Hostility Women Face Pursuing Political Office in California” focused on measuring, comparing, and ultimately improving women political candidates’ experiences with hostility on the campaign trail.

Sarah received her PhD in Anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania, and her dissertation research compared and analyzed how Democratic and Republican women’s leadership training advances gender parity in public office. She was elected Student Board Member for the Society for Anthropological Sciences 2017-2020. Her work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, American Anthropological Association, and others.

Sarah is a first-generation college student from the Rust Belt, a former college radio host, a foster cat parent, and a doughnut enthusiast.
