Sen. Liz Figueroa (ret.) served in the California State Legislature for 12 years and, in 2011, became California’s Vice President for Public Affairs of Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, the largest Planned Parenthood affiliate in the country. From 2009 – 2013 Senator Figueroa was the Legislator in Residence at UCB, sharing her legislative experience with political science majors during each spring semester.
While focusing on health and consumer issues during her tenure in Sacramento, she was the first legislator to champion Internet users’ right to privacy from “content-snooping” email services, including Google’s Gmail. Ms. Figueroa was one of the first Latinas elected to the California legislature from Northern California. Both of her parents were from El Salvador and Ms. Figueroa is proud to be recognized as the highest ranking legislator of Salvadorian decent.
