Hon. Yvonne Brathwaite Burke

The Honorable Yvonne Braithwaite Burke has had a lot of firsts; she is the first African American woman elected to the CA Assembly, the first African American & first female supervisor on the L.A. County Board of Supervisors, and the first African American woman to represent the west coast in Congress. She also has the distinction to be the first sitting member of Congress to give birth (daughter Autumn) while serving in office, as well as the first Congresswoman to be granted maternity leave.
