Established in 2002, the Los Angeles African American Women’s Public Policy Institute (LAAAWPPI) premiered as a 501c3 non-profit organization providing leadership development to African American women in Los Angeles. LAAAWPPI’s mission is to prepare women for leadership in the areas of public policy, government and public affairs. Along with honorary event co-chairs Congresswoman Karen Bass and Senator Holly Mitchell, we host our Ninth Annual LAAAWPPI Women In Action Awards Gala Reception and recognize the following 5 outstanding women who have “broken the glass ceiling” professionally: • Karen Earl, Executive Director & CEO, Jenesse Center Inc. • Honorable Jacquelyn Lacey, Los Angeles County District Attorney • Capri Maddox, Special Assistant City Attorney, City of Los Angeles • Lola Smallwood Cuevas, Project Director, Los Angeles Black Worker Center • Denita Willoughby, Regional Vice President, External Affairs, Southern California Gas Company LAAAWPPI’s goal is to annually attract and train a talented pool of women and prepare them to step into leadership positions at all levels. We convene a 10 week intensive program, hosted on the campus of University of Southern California and taught by corporate leaders, elected officials, campaign and public affairs consultants, fund raisers, community activists, legislative staff and board and commissioners; all on a volunteer basis. Your attendance at our gala reception allows LAAAWPPI to provide scholarships to assist those applicants who are unable to meet the $1600 tuition requirement. Can we count on your support? if you cannot attend, a contribution of any amount is appreciated. Let me know and I will personally pick it up or you may mail it to me.
